Anorexia can be mental and then constitutes a psychological disorder. It is also part of eating disorders. Anorexia is defined as the refusal to eat.
Anorexia, a symptom or a disease in its own right?
The fact of refusing to eat can be explained by a general malaise. A person suffering from depression, anxiety or neuroses may suffer from anorexia. In this case, it is more of a symptom than a disease.
Anorexia may be an illness in its own right, in this case it is a psychological illness. This disease affects between 1% and 2% of adolescent girls and young women. Food deprivation is usually accompanied by intense and regular physical activity.
Patients with anorexia have impaired vision of themselves and still consider themselves overweight.
There are two major types of anorexia
- Anorexia-bulimia: the person deprives himself of food then gives in to a crisis during which it will swallow very large quantities of food. Once the crisis is over, she feels guilty and tries to eliminate what she has eaten (vomiting, laxatives) or by increasing the sports sessions.
Restrictive anorexia: The person tries at all costs to control his weight through the deprivation of food.
Causes of anorexia The causes of anorexia are poorly known. They can be genetic, social or psychological. The various factors triggering anorexia can be as follows:
- An inappropriate remark on the weight;
- Mourning, or emotional shock
- Social or family pressure;
- A need for control
- Low self-esteem
- Hypersensitivity
15% of patients die as a result of undernutrition. The suicide rate is also higher among anorexics. However, patients are generally unaware of the risks they are taking and it is therefore up to the family to intervene before it is too late.
- Watch your teenager if he / she starts a diet;
- If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a health professional;
- Once the care is started, the support of the entourage is important for the patient.
for some persons Anorexia is often seen as a female disease. Yet men can also be confronted.
Do not stay alone in the face of illness, get help from a psychologist or psychotherapist.
