St. Gautam Dantas and his team at the University of Washington in St. Louis (USA) discovered by chance that bacteria that could use penicillin as nutrients.

Since then, many other soil bacteria have been shown to do the same.
In order to investigate how bacteria do this, Dantas and his team have grown four bacterial strains of this nature under various laboratory conditions.

Researchers focused on genes that become active when bacteria are exposed to penicillin, and observe the effect of deleting one gene at a time. The result is that bacteria have been able to grow on penicillin through a series of enzymes.
