Stress is a mental, emotional, or physical strain caused, e.g. by anxiety or overwork. It may cause such symptoms as raised blood pressure or depression.
Stress can be
- Climatic
- Nutritional
- Social
- Internal
The stress alarm is switched on when stress is present. If the perceived stress does not pose threat to human life, it is switched off.
The stress hormone is cortisol in humans. and corticosterol in animals. cortisterol is released by adrenal cortex.
Side effects of prolonged stress
- Catabolism- breaking down of muscle. Causing loss of weight and emanciation
- Suppression of the immune system
- Reduction in the anti-inflammatory response.
When a person is under stress, feed intake reduces. however, the glucose level is still increased. This happens due to gluconeogenesis. (conversion of fats and proteins to glucose)
The body responds to stress by
- hypothalamus- pituitary- adrenal- axis (HPA Axis)
- Adrenaline and Progesterone are also produced alongside cortisols.

- immune system can be altered

- Headache
- Fatigue
- Body pains
- Increased blood pressure
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Nutritional disorders
- Mental breakdown
TIPS ON HOW TO MANAGE STRESS
- Rest regularly
- Don't skip breakfast
- Drink a lot of water
- Exercise regularly
- Remove stressors
