As an interesting side note, SPLENDA, or sucralose is not much different from sugar, it's a modified sugar molecule that does not absorb in the intestine so does not cause the difficulties associated with sugar. However...
Because the molecule does not absorb into organisms, it has no biological activity and thus is not broken down in the environment.... where it accumulates, slowly sweetening the water in the aquifers and lakes. Think on that the next time you sweeten your tea with Splenda......
