Hi Steemians! I would like to share about heart attack today. Do you or any of your loved ones are at risk of getting heart attack? Have you thought of what to do when it really happens?

Heart disease is one of the leading cause of death in both men and women. Everyone should know more about heart disease.

Early action is important for heart attack!

First and foremost, being able to recognize typical and atypical symptoms of heart attack are of utmost important.

Time is myocardium. The more delay is the treatment, the more damage to your heart muscle.

Professional medical assistant is critical to improve the survival and quality of life of heart attack patients.

Recognising the symptoms of heart attack

Typical symptoms

  • Chest discomfort/pain that is heaviness, pressuring or squeezing
  • Pain and discomfort that spread beyond your chest to other parts of your body like shoulders, neck, upper arms, jaw or teeth

Atypical symptoms

  • Unexplained shortness of breath – Panting or unable to carry on a conversation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness- You may feel like you are about to pass out.
  • Cold sweats
  • Anxiety

Studies found out that women are more likely to experience atypical symptoms than men.

Always be prepared

  • Familiar with the list of symptoms of heart attack
  • Talk to your family or friends on recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and what to do if it happens.
  • Create a paper with all the essential information listed on it including your concurrent diseases, medication history, allergies to food or medications and emergency contact numbers.

What to do when it happens?

  • Call ambulance or ask others to rush you to the nearest hospital.
  • While waiting for professional medical help, calm the person down by having him/her sit or lie down.

Before the paramedics arrived:

Take aspirin. It is one of the most commonly taken blood thinning medication these days. Always keep a full-strength (300mg) uncoated aspirin in your purse. It may come in handy at times. Chew and swallow one with plain water. (The medicine works faster if you chew it.)

OR

In Malaysia, high-risk patients are more commonly prescribed with sublingual glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) or so called “the medicine under the tongue” instead of aspirin.

The correct way of taking Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN)

  1. GTN widen the arteries that carry blood to the heart muscle and relax the veins that return blood back from the body to the heart.
  2. For prevention purpose, (to prevent sudden chest pain before exercise or exertion), take 1 tablet 5 to 10 minutes before exercise or exertion)
  3. If possible, patient should rest, preferably sit down before taking GTN.
  4. Place one tablet under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. Do not swallow.
  5. If pain remains after 5 minutes, remove the undissolved tablet and place a new tablet under the tongue. The dose may be repeated for a maximum of 3 times.
  6. If the pain worsen/persists after 3 tablets, call an ambulance or go to hospital immediately.

Storage of sublingual GTN

  • Sublingual GTN should be protected from light and moisture. Thus, store at room temperature in a small & dark-coloured (preferably black) plastic bag. Always keep a bottle of GTN wherever you go.
  • Any unopened GTN can last until the expiry date.
  • However, once opened, it can only last for 2 months. Discard any remaining after 2 months. (Remember to write the date of opening on the bottle!)

Always be prepared than sorry!

At this day in age I think I will have a heart attack.Scary stuff indeed. Is the medication you listed over the counter? GTN? Thanks.

Here in Malaysia, GTN can be sold without a prescription. But usually patients will get it free from the pharmacy if they are under follow-up in government hospitals. However, its a prescription medicine in UK if I'm not mistaken @mawit07. Not sure about practice in other countries though.

Actually your risk of getting heart attack is low if you do medical check-up every year and have a healthy lifestyle (diets, exercise and enough rest). However, be extra alert if you have a strong family history of heart attack even though you already living a healthy lifestyle.
If you are still concern about your risk of getting heart attack, probably its good to consult medical professionals. Cheers :)
