Understanding the six essential nutrients is very important, what are nutrients, how do we get them and what are they for?
Nutrients do not work by themselves but synergistically with one another. Here is an example of how the synergistic interaction between nutrients in foods works.
Calcium for example is featured as the nutrients necessary for strong and healthy bones. But the truth is that you also require other things such as vitamin D and K2, magnesium, and minerals like boron.
All of these nutrients are not concentrated in one food but in many types of foods, since you require all of these vitamins for healthy bones you would have to consume all of the different foods in order to gain all the benefits.
What are the six essential nutrients?
- Vitamins. Vitamin C for example is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which provides structure to blood vessels, bone and ligaments.
- Carbohydrates. The main energy source for the brain. Without carbohydrates, the body could not function.
- Protein. The major structural component of cells, responsible for the building and repair of body tissues.
- Fat. The energy source that when consumed, increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E and K.
- Minerals. The to maintain fluid volume in the cells and helps to prevent the rise of blood pressure.
- Water. Helps maintain homeostasis in the body and transports nutrients to cells. Water will also assists in removing waste products from the body.
