Types Of Food As In Hinduism

In India there is popular food philosophy,

Jaisa ann vaisa mann.

Translating to,

You are what you eat and a large part of your temperament and nature depends on food you consume.

There are three types of foods according to Hinduism.

  1. Satvik - Fresh/Healthy food

  2. Rajasi - Tasty/Stimulating Foood

  3. Tamasi - Stale/Preserved Food

What kind of food we eat, influences our behavior.

Satvik foods promotes longevity, virtue, strength, health, happiness, and joy.

These foods are juicy, fatty, smooth, substantial, nutritious and pleasing to the heart.

Balancedly cooked, Farm fresh fruits and vegetables, wholesome grains, fresh cow's milk belong to this category.

Rajasi foods are those that are very bitter, sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry, and burning.

Rajasi foods have a stimulating effect on the mind and body.

They push aggressiveness, competitiveness, will enhance ego, restlessness, passionate. These foods are tasty and hipes activity.

Coffee, Tea, Pepper, Green Chillies, wines are of this nature.

These foods causes mental dullness and physical dumbness. Individuals who eat tamasi food tend toward depression, laziness, excessive sleep and eating.

Stale, artificial colored and flavored, preservatives added, cooked overnight, , fermented food or drinks, , leftovers, prepared meat of animals dead long back, too cold, deep refrigerated foods are tamasi.
