Amalaki in Ayurveda
The Indian Gooseberry has very high importance in Ayurveda. In India, it is believed since ancient times that Amrit (heavenly nectar) contains all Rasas and hence it can impart immortality when taken. In this way, Amla fruit stands next to Amrit because it has all the five Rasas. Amla fruit is also considered Rasayan for Pitta in Ayurveda.
The Ancient book, ‘Charaka Samhita’ mentions that in all the Rasayans (Rasayan means the Ayurvedic formulation made for the positive effect on physiology), Amla Rasayana is the most nourishing and potent one. Charaka Smhita, also mentions that, Amla is the best rejuvenative herb among all. Charaka also said specially, that Amla is a great Rasayana to help protecting people from diseases and prevents premature ageing.

Amla fruit is scientifically proved to have great antioxidant, antistress and immunomodulatory properties. Apart from its use in medicines, Amla is also used for herbal skin and hair treatments and formulations. Apart from rich in Vitamin C, Amla fruit also contains many other vitamins and minerals, like ion, phosphorous, calcium, carotene, thiamine, carbohydrate and riboflavin. Amla is strong antioxidant in nature due to tannoid complexes.
Indian scientists from National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, in their test in 2004 found that Amla fruit blocks chemical named aldose reductase, which causes cataracts in patients having diabetes.
In a scientific study on many animals, it was shown that Amla helps in preventing heavy metals toxic build-up caused by exposure to metals (lead, aluminium, nickel) frequently. During tests, when alone vitamin C was taken (in same amount as of Amla fruit), then less protection from heavy metal’s toxic build-up was observed. And when Amla fruit was taken, complete protection was observed. This test proved that all the ingredients of Amla combined shield DNA from metal poisoning.
In a clinical study to investigate effect of Amla on gastritis syndrome (amlapitta), Amla powder (churna) was given 3 times a day for 7 days. The Amla churna was effective in more then 85% of cases. Many cases of Hyperchlorhydria combined with burning sensation in the cardiac and abdominal regions were also benefited.
