عفونت گوش میانی از بیماری‌های شایعی است که معمولاً کودکان به دنبال سرماخوردگی یا بر اثر حساسیت و عوامل دیگر به آن دچار می‌شوند. در حقیقت، در برخی از موارد، عفونت گوش میانی ناشی از آلرژی‌های فصلی است که موجب پرخونی و بسته شدن مسیر تخلیه‌ی مایع گوش میانی به داخل حلق از طریق شیپور استاش می‌شود.
در مواردی که کودک به علت آلرژی و حساسیت دچار عفونت‌های مکرر گوش می‌شود، مراجعه به پزشک ضرورت دارد.

عوامل دیگری نیز می‌تواند زمینه‌ساز ابتلای کودکان به عفونت دستگاه تنفس و به دنبال آن عفونت گوش میانی شود. به عنوان مثال، کودکانی که در خانه‌ی افراد سیگاری زندگی می‌کنند و در معرض دود سیگار دست‌دوم قرار می‌گیرند، بیشتر دچار عفونت‌های تنفسی می‌شوند. به این خاطر است که ضروری است که از سیگار کشیدن در اطراف کودک شیرخوار به شدت اجتناب به عمل آید.
برخی از اقدامات می‌تواند در جلوگیری از ابتلای کودکان شیرخوار به عفونت گوش میانی مؤثر باشد. مثلاً در صورتی که کودک با استفاده از بطری تغذیه می‌شود، موقع شیر دادن باید سر او را بالاتر از معده قرار دهید. این کار از بسته شدن مجرای استاش جلوگیری می‌کند. با همین اقدام ساده می‌توان تا حدودی از تجمع مایع در گوش میانی جلوگیری کرد.
نکته‌ای که در این رابطه حائز اهمیت است، این است که عفونت‌های مکرر گوش میانی گرچه مسئله‌ی ناراحت کننده‌ای است؛ ولی وقتی بچه بزرگ‌تر می‌شود؛ معمولاً این مشکل خودبه‌خود برطرف می‌شود. به عبارت دیگر، وقتی که کودکان به سن حدوداً ۴ تا ۶ سالگی می‌رسند، عفونت‌های تکرار شونده‌ی گوش میانی متوقف می‌شوند.
