How to Not be Depressed and Feel Good Instead

All of us have at one point in our lives been there. Some of us are there now. A place we will never want to be again. We have been so sad that we thought we will never be happy again. It felt like life was meaningless and no matter what we do we can never be our old selves again.

But that's not true. We can be fight depression by consciously trying to be happy. Here are a few things you can do to help yourself.

Don't Blame Yourself

The first thing that we do when we are depressed is to blame ourselves for everything that is wrong. We tend to believe that we deserve to be sad.

Get out of self victimization and try to think of it as another illness you have and that you will get better. So instead of beating yourself again and again, be positive about it.

Exercise Regularly

Yes, you heard that right. Exercise makes us feel good about us. Hitting the gym or going for a run regularly, even when we don't feel like doing it, can boost your mood for hours.

Eat Healthy

We tend to binge eat when we are sad and vulnerable. And that makes us feel more disgusted with ourselves.

So instead of binging on chocolates, sweets and potato chips try to switch to healthier options like fruits, green vegetables, whole grains etc.

Get Adequate Sleep

Loss of sleep and depression go together. Some of us feel depressed when we don't get enough sleep. Getting adequate shut-eye time is essential for our mental health.

Avoid Drugs and Alcohol

People with depression turn towards alcohol or worse, drugs to alleviate their symptoms. In the long run this decision only harms them and worsens the situation. So, avoid drugs and alcohol at all costs.

Pursue a Hobby

Don't get caught in a rut. Do something that you like to do. Read a book, paint, write. Challenge yourself and be creative. This will make us feel accomplished and proud which goes a long way in fighting with depression.

Have Fun

Go out with friends, try to do all the things that you used to enjoy earlier. This might sound like a cliche but it is of utmost importance because we don't want our social life and relationships to get affected.
