Popularly known as Nopal and commonly referred to in English as prickly pear, the type species is Opuntia. This cactus is a plant with extraordinary regenerative and healing powers. Its uses range from gastronomy and nutrition to beauty and health.
This plant is part of the Mexican mythology, in which it is considered as the plant of life, since it apparently never dies, since when dried it can give life to a new plant. The cactus is one of the national symbols of Mexico; it is found in the national coat of arms holding the golden eagle that devours the serpent, rooted in a small stone island on the water.
Nopal are one of the very low-calorie vegetables. 100 g of fresh leaves carry just 16 calories. Nonetheless, its paddles (leaves) have many vital phytochemicals, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can immensely benefit health. Attractive blooms begin to appear during the spring all along the sides of pads, which subsequently develop into pear shaped delicious "cactus fruits". It's used to make products as juices, sweets or beer. These fruits are sweet and juicy and their taste is somewhat reminiscence of watermelon and strawberry combination. They are rich in fiber and vitamins, especially vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K, as well as vitamin B2 and vitamin B6. Its edible fruits, tunas or figs, are very popular in Latin America, Spain and Italy.
I was surprised to see this cactus in a friend's country house, and take some pictures. It has very attractive fruits and flowers and much more attractive known benefits, such as: Boost Immune System, Improve Digestion, Weight Loss, Skin Care, Prevent Cancer, Boost Metabolism, Build Strong Bones, Improve Sleep, Neuroprotective Properties, Anti-inflammatory Agent, Control Diabetes, Fights Cholesterol.
