There really are unbelievable oddities in this life, and it makes one wonder as to how enigmatic the human #science on this beautiful planet Earth really is.
We’ve heard of the verified wonders of our world. We’ve heard of the unbelievable sceneries and features on this earth which defy human understanding and logic.
Even science has struggled to give explanations to certain phenomenon and occurrences we’ve witnessed in recent times.
Now imagine a very healthy human being who suddenly develops a stomach that is an “auto-brewery”?
A stomach which converts food into alcohol, and intoxicates the person to stupor?
You think that’s impossible? Well check out the story below……And kindly leave your thoughts, below.
A 48 year old former soldier Ray Lewis has become a “human brewery” as a result of a rare and weird medical condition, “auto-brewery syndrome (ABS)” which causes his stomach to convert food to alcohol.
Ray Lewis body stomach is so eccentric that excess carbs or just one meal, can render him so drunk and leave him paralytic.
The strange syndrome cost the former US army paratrooper from Eugene Oregon his truck driving job after he crashed after eating lunch.
Ray Lewis’ wife Sierra at one point assumed that Ray was a closet alcoholic and banned him from accessing his bank account to purchase alcohol. She also put him on a strict diet.
Ray was however, still getting “knocked out” every day until September 2015 when he was diagnosed with the weird condition.
Following the diagnoses, Ray is now restricted to protein, nuts and vegetables and is forbidden from touching chips, chocolate, and any other carbohydrates or sugars to prevent any alcoholic episodes.
His wife, Sierra, who runs a soap business and takes care of Ray has also resorted to attaching a GPS tracker on him whenever she has to leave his side, so that she can know when he wanders off, from being drunk.
Sierra said…
> “He would suddenly be intoxicated after spending hours within arms-reach of me as he helped me sell my soaps at various craft fairs.
> “We were working side-by-side for eight to 10 hours straight, eating the same exact foods, and sharing beverage cups. I had no idea what was going on.”
> “I only leave him alone at home when I must go to work in town. I rarely leave his side for long.
> “I got a GPS tracking device that is clipped to his backpack if I have to leave him unattended in public.
> “One minute he is fine and the next it smells like someone has smashed a vodka bottle on the ground.”
Ray met Sierra 17 years ago in California. They got married in 2006. He began experiencing the “ABS symptoms” like feeling nauseous, sweaty, and repeating conversations up to five times a day, in late 2013.
It was however until he crashed his truck in December 2014, that the alarm bells started ringing.
Ray said…
> “Most people have laughed at us when we say the words ‘auto-brewery’. They only stop making jokes when they realise it is not a joke and that we are both suffering.”
> “It has the same physiological effects on the body as lifelong binge drinking. The body’s organs don’t know or care where the booze originates.
> “The triggers can be infuriatingly inconsistent, but I can’t eat sugary snacks or carb-rich foods I used to enjoy.
> “Obviously drinking is out too, but I wouldn’t want to do that. Getting drunk without knowing when or why is just horrible.”
Various medical researches have proven that long term alcohol abuse and misuse is linked to stroke, heart disease, and cancer.
The couple were only made aware of the ABS syndrome when a friend who had seen it on a television show mentioned it to them.
After some enquiries on the bizarre condition they concluded that the ABS was the only logical explanation for Ray’s sudden and strange drunkenness, after meals.
His blood alcohol readings were usually over the charts and over legal limits, even when he could swear that not a single drop of liquor had past his lips.
The couple got referred to a doctor in Ohio, Dr Anup Kanodia who finally diagnosed his condition.
Following his diagnosis, Ray has been struggling to adapt to his new life as an “alcoholic” even though he doesn’t consume any alcohol.
I don't know how to describe it but its still gross to me haaa iewww but at least you don't have to sit at bar to get drunk haa cheers
I agree @dylen. It seems super weird to be getting drunk without having to visit a bar. Lolz.
Thanks for visiting buddy!
Its my pleasure, your articles caught my attention and its interesting haa
I hope for you that you can find a way to live with it. Luck!
Hi @awcurio .... i hope he does find a way to cope with the condition too. Thanks for dropping by.
I read about a man with this condition in a book about candida. I don't know for sure that candida is the main culprit, but this is a symptom of dysbiosis. Many people believe that disease is genetic, but most of our immunity is in our internal ecosystem of microbes. They have a large degree of influence on gene expression as well. If you want to learn how to balance your microflora I recommend lifespa.com and the book The Prime (I forget the author).
Thanks for sharing your thoughts @cyrustheaverage. I just went through the lifespa.com link you sent, and i found it to be a very useful natural health care site. Thanks for sharing that.
And i think you are right about genetics being factored as a contributor to the disease too. Truly, the various microbes in our bodies could be weird from one body to another. And that's the reason for some of the weirdness in people's body system. Thanks for visiting @cyrustheaverage
