Dental health is very important to overall health at every stage of life. As you get older you are not immune to dental problems. The mouth serves a gateway to giving the body nutrition and it helps to improve social interaction, increase confidence and the overall well-being of the individual. Observing good oral health and dental hygiene helps to prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.
Studies show that gum disease can cause infections in your lungs and this in turn can cause serious respiratory problems. The body will not show immediate signs at the beginning but over long periods of breathing in bacteria from infected teeth and gums it starts to affect the lungs. In pregnant women gum infections can arise from the fluctuating hormones that come with pregnancy. Studies show that gum disease or inflammation of the mouth can make the body produce prostaglandins in high levels and this can cause early labor.
In the event that the body is weakened by a disease or medical treatment, bacteria from the mouth can cause infection in other parts of the body. With a swab of saliva from the mouth a medical professional can determine how healthy a person is. Studies show that 90% of all systemic diseases give off oral signs and symptoms. Although your saliva can help protect against some bacteria it is not effective against other forms of aggressive bacteria, these types of bacteria form a dental plague and this appears as a sticky, colorless film that sticks to the teeth which can cause different health problems. Having good dental health helps to reduce the risk of some systemic diseases like cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and premature birth.
Researchers at the New York University (NYU) came up with a conclusion after some research and experimentation that gum inflammation can cause Alzheimer’s disease. The studies showed that gum disease is associated with low cognitive function of people that are above 70. The results showed that gingivitis (which is found in people that have chronic gum disease) was found in Alzheimer patients. Furthermore, researchers have found that periodontitis which causes gum inflammation can cause pancreatic cancer. The study showed that people who have a history of gum disease are 64% more likely to be affected than people who have never had gum disease.
Probably the most important association is between dental hygiene and heart disease. Studies show that bacteria caused by the inflammation of the gums and periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and get stuck to the arteries of the heart thereby causing atherosclerosis (this is known as the hardening of the arteries). This causes a plaque to develop on the inner walls of the arteries which then hardens and it can decrease or stop the blood flow in the body. This increases the risk of a stroke or a heart attack.
There are some effective treatment methods that can help people that have dental problems such as nonsurgical procedures like root cleaning and the application of antimicrobials. In the event the person has a serious condition, conventional or laser surgery is an option. To maintain good oral health, dentists advise that you brush after every meal with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and use a mouth rinse to kill any bacteria that reside in the mouth. Medical professionals advise that tobacco should be avoided and the intake of sodas, coffees and alcohol should be limited. The consumption of calcium and other vitamins help strengthen the teeth and fight diseases. In the event that any problems arise it is advisable to visit a professional for cleaning, prevention and treatment. This can protect more than your teeth, it can help save your life.
That's me screwed then! False teeth, heart attacks and strokes here we come! Resteemed as a warning to others!! :)

Interesting! What are your sources? Thanks
For this article, I asked my sister who just became a Doctor, I researched as much as I could (books I have here, google, etc). My uncle died from a dental issue, he lost his back molar and let it go for so long that bacteria formed and he had a heart attack. I remember he would always bite his cheek on that side, after researching this topic I found out it was to compensate for the lost tooth. Thanks @fleur
Makes me want to get all my teeth fixed hehe ... great article!
Thanks @stacking :)
Get them fixed soon!
Send me some steem power instead 😂😂😂😂
lol I barely have any to send hahaha, but I resteemed you :)
Give it a month or two, you are going to have thousands :)
Hi @roadtowisdom, a common factor between gum health and vascular health is mercury toxicity. The relationship you are describing may actually be more deeply underpinned by mercury toxicity, which is horribly chronic among us.

Re: Gum problems: "Some of the oral effects documented in the literature to be caused by amalgam include gingivitis, oral gum tissue inflammation, bleeding gums, bone loss, mouth sores, oral lesions, pain and discomfort, " [http://amalgam.org/education/scientific-evidenceresearch/mercury-amalgam-fillings-major-factor-periodontal-disease-oral-health-problems/]

Wow, another great post @road2wisdom thank you for sharing.
Thank you
enhancing the immune system is key to proper body regulation - the use of chemicals to kill bacteria is not recommended if holistic balance is sought.
one important point is that root canals are associated with cancer - since a tiny space exists between the living root of the tooth and the new crown. this space an act as a hotel for bacteria, putting the body in a constant struggle it cannot win since the immune system cannot reach the 'hotel' to clean it out properly.
Very well put @ura-soul I recently had a problem where the dentist needed to use antibiotics on my tooth. I told her hold on let me try colloidal silver first and come back. I did that treatment for 1 month and it worked. I was lucky I caught the problem early. My uncle died from a problem with his teeth, he lost his back molar and he would chew his cheek constantly to compensate for that missing tooth. In the mean time the tooth that broke off, rotted away causing bone loss and a hole filled with bacteria that reached his heart and gave him a heart attack. He was only 55. Whenever I can go holistic I can, its natures way! Thanks for your input @ura-soul
i see, ok - yes, clearly the teeth are significant to wellbeing in humans. in my own case here, i didn't visit the dentist for about 10 years and unfortunately didn't reach the required level of hygiene in that time for me to not have problems. i am part way through some fillings here and the eczema that appeared on my hands a few months ago gets a bit better with every filling. :/
Glad to read things are getting better. Wow 10 years is a long time, may I ask was it a fear of the dentist, no time, or a money issue that kept you away for long?
there were several issues:
i have always had issue with my teeth, whether i have gone to a dentist or not - so i basically chose to use them only responsively and not pro-actively. i think i will change my approach now though. I also intend to further improve my diet and exercise - but i have a very good dentist here now, so it is all less of a concern for me.
Wow, Sorry to hear all of that. First let me say you write really well! Very impressive.
As for fluoride, I know what you mean ugh my sons school put fluoride on all the kids with out my consent! I was so livid because he didn't have any problems with his teeth. I'm glad you are one to research for yourself and have found a good dentist now. Thanks for replying :)
thanks for your kind words! my grandma told me i would be a writer when i was about 5 years old and i didn't know what she meant then ;)
i am currently in the process of putting out a few posts on fluoride research and how to create clean water..
you can also view the fluoride katalist at the social network i run called ureka.org: https://www.ureka.org/katalists/view/7416/the-dangers-of-fluoride-and-what-we-can-do-to-heal-from-our-fluoride-exposure
