Growth and development is not haphazard-it has a timetable. Although there may be some variations, the pattern is predictable. One can know in general what to expect at what age from normal children, children who follow the norms and standards. These standards are established by observing a large number of normal children. A graphical representation of these norms shows how children growing at different paces would grow . A child’s growth when assessed subsequently should be on the same line as before. If it goes towards the lower side, the child is faltering. Faltering may be temporary, due to some illness, but if it persists for 2 or 3 months, the child should be seen by a paediatrician.
