Men, women, children die daily from this deadly ailment called cancer.
The recent alarm on rising worldwide rate of cancer by the World Health Organization (WHO) should worry African Countries , including Nigeria, where the dissidents is generally common/ most prevalent. Available statistics demonstrate that cancer killed 7.6 million people in 2008 around the world, and there is indication that the figure could double to 13 million by 2030. According to WHO, cancer accounts 13 percent of all deaths registered globally and 70 percent of that figure happens in middle and low pay Nations. In Nigeria, around 10,000 cancer deaths are recorded every year while 250,000 new cases are recorded yearly. It is additionally worrisome that only 17 percent of African Countries are said to have adequately funded cancer control programs, while less than half of all countries in the world have functional plans to prevent the disease and provide treatment and care to patients.
In 2014 an estimated 15,780 children and adolescents ages 0-19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,960 died that same year in United States of America.
Cancer is a malignant and invasive growth or tumor especially one originating in epithelium, tending to recur after excision and to metastasis to other sites. Epithelium is one of the four basic types of animal tissue , along with connective tissue, muscle tissue and nervous tissue . Epithelial tissues line the cavities and surfaces of blood vessels and organs throughout the body. Metastasis is a change of position, state, or form. It is the spread of a disease-producing agency (such as cancer cells) from the initial or primary site of disease to another part of the body.
Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases . In a wide range of cancer, a portion of the body's cells start to partition without halting and spread into surrounding tissues.
Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is comprised of trillions of cells. Typically, human cells grow and divide to shape/form new cells as the body needs them. At the point when cells grow old or end up plainly damaged, they die, and new cells have their place.
At the point when cancer grows/develop, be that as it may, this orderly process breaks down, as cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed/required. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form growths called tumors.
Many cancers form solid tumors, which are masses of tissue. Cancers of the blood, such as leukemias, generally do not form solid tumors. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which implies they can spread into, or attack, nearby tissues. Likewise, as these tumors grow , some cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumors a long way from the original tumor.
Unlike malignant tumors, benign tumors don't spread into, or attack, nearby tissues. Benign tumors can sometimes be quite large, in any case. Whenever removed , they usually don’t grow back, though malignant tumors in some cases do. Unlike most benign tumors elsewhere in the body, benign brain tumors can be life threatening.
A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. There are several main types of cancer. Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue. Leukemia is a cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord. Also called malignancy.
