Attack on Supplements - Vitamin D, calcium supplements may not lower bone fracture risk

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Older adults who take vitamin D and calcium are no less likely to break their hips or other bones than peers who don’t use these supplements, a research review suggests.

Researchers examined data from 33 previous trials with a total of more than 51,000 people aged 50 or older who were living in the community, not in nursing homes or other institutional settings. They found no difference in fracture risk among people who got no treatment, a placebo or dummy pill, or vitamin D and calcium alone or in combination.

“It is time to stop taking calcium and vitamin D supplements for the community-dwelling older adults,” said lead study author Dr. Jia-Guo Zhao, a researcher in the department of orthopedic surgery at Tianjin Hospital in China.

Oh Boy, here we go again another hit piece on vitamins supplements. Here's the big issue with supplements you find at Walmart, most of them are complete garbage and don't do anything to improve your health. Case in point, calcium. You can buy a bottle of centrum silver at Walmart for 20 bucks and it says it has calcium in it but all you are doing is pissing that 20 bucks down the drain. I'll explain this later but lets continue one with this article.

When people take daily vitamin D doses of 1,000 IU or higher, however, they run the risk of serious side effects, particularly when used in combination with calcium. Some previous research has linked high doses of vitamin D to an increased risk of falls, fractures, kidney stones, certain cancers and premature death.

Key words are "or higher" generally speaking 1,000 IU is nothing. Most people that have severe side effects from vitamin D were taking 50,000 ot 100,000 IU for months. 4,000 IU or lower is considered safe

One limitation of the study is that some of the trials in the analysis didn’t include pre-treatment measurements of vitamin D blood levels, which might have influenced how much the supplements impacted fracture risk. Some of the trials also were not high quality experiments, the authors note.

So the media publishes this story anyways knowing full well that authors admit these trials were pretty basic and the quality was shit.

Even though severe calcium or vitamin D deficiencies can contribute to loss of bone density and an increased risk of fractures, people with this problem are typically too sick to be included in clinical trials, noted Dr. Kurt Kennel, a specialist in endocrinology, metabolism and nutrition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

So at the very bottom they admit vitamin deficiencies can contribute to bone loss but the people that most need the supplements aka the ones that most likely will benefit from them are not included in the study. How convenience of them to leave these people out.

Now back to calcium, not all calcium is the same. You have Calcium Carbonate which is a cheap form of calcium commonly found in limestone and used in cheap vitamin supplements.

-Calcium Carbonate aka limestone. Does it look like food to you?

Now Calcium Phosphate and Calcium citrate are much better form of Calcium your body can absorb. Your body doesn't know what to do with ground up limestone but it knows how to deal with calcium coming from plants and animals that you eat.

It's also important to have a well round vitamin supplement with dozen of vitamins and minerals in it. All plants and animals you eat have more than two vitamins in them and many of those vitamins complement one other for proper absorption.

I know I'm leaving a ton of information out of this post but the main point to take away from this article is that the devils is in the details. You can't just say all supplements are garbage because they are not. Cheap supplements that just say calcium on the bottle and don't give you the specific calcium you're taking like calcium citrate or calcium phosphate are 100% garbage in my book and you should avoid them like the plague. Look for vitamin supplements that say plant derived on the bottle and stay away from the cheap Walmart brands

-This looks like much better food to eat.

@wakeupnd this is an eye-opener for those who don't know. I keep telling people that no source of pure nutrient or "supplements" are better than those we have been provided by nature. Learn to eat fresh from the source not the crap in the fancy bottle. "Health is wealth"

Very good info. You could add canned salmon and sardines to your list. The bones are soft, and can be crushed into the fish for extra calcium.

You could add oatmeal and oranges to your list as well.

Good eating, good health!
