TRAVEL BALI: Top 5 Healthy, Vegan-Friendly Eateries

in #health7 years ago

Vegans, vegetarians, gluten intolerant people of the world.. unite. Bali has got you covered when it comes to incredible food with ALL dietary requirements welcome.

I’m a pescatarian and I like to stay as healthy as possible when traveling. I have found there are not enough guides providing information about healthy (and vegan) places to eat.

Never fear because I spent the last week EATING my way through Seminyak and Canggu to bring you the best eateries around. I tried around 25 of the best places which were recommended to me by locals, found in online travel guides and some I discovered some just walking around.
What can I say.. i'm a pro-eater.

Here are my top 5  recommendations for healthy food in Seminyak and Canggu.

1. The Shady Shack

Quite honestly the best place for healthy food in the south of the island. It’s much more than a shady shack, think of it as a hidden cabin, overlooking lush green rice paddies, with plenty of shaded areas to save you from the beating sun. It is nothing short of HEAVEN for the foodies out there.
First up, can we just please take a look at the 'Gyro Jack Burger' which is mainly pulled jackfruit and has a very meaty texture, served with mini roasted potatoes.

WHAAAAAT. This was nothing short of insanely tasty and if there is one thing I miss as a veggie, it's the thickness and meatiness of biting into a burger. Well the Gyro Jack Burger pretty much cured that craving.

When I first visited this this cafe I saw lots of people eating burgers and presumed they also sold meat, but nooooope. The Shady Shack is purely vegetarian and has plenty of vegan options too. I had to come back a few times to make sure I tried as much of this diverse, goodness-filled, menu as possible. You cannot go wrong with this place, although it has started to get a little crowded - so I would advise heading down on a weekday. Even though every day is Sunday in Bali!

And if the burger wasn't enough.. check out this 'Halloumi Bowl'! The best halloumi i've had in a very long time. Extremely filling and entirely delicious!

This place is just to die for! It's probably worth adding the sweet chocolate treats and the smoothies are delicious too. Vegans and vegetarians enter into experimental heaven. Non-vegans.. I bet this place could make you vegan for a day! ;-)

Check out The Shady Shack for their address and further info here.

2. KYND

Think of all the kinds of amazing toast toppings you can think of. Got it? Now head to plant-based cafe KYND and experience all of that instagramable imagery come to life.
Let's start with their smoothies. Smoothies. Done. Right. I don't know what else to tell you! The most filling, fresh and delicious smoothies I had my whole time in Bali.

I had the big brekkie and it set me up for the day. Potentially the most delicious topped-toast i’ve ever tasted. Complete with spinach spread, multiple kinds of hummus and rye bread I honestly could not eat enough of it.

The smoothie bowls are also pretty spectacular.

When it first arrived I wasn't overly impressed with the way it looked, because i've seen much prettier smoothie bowls, but the hidden pockets of granola throughout the smoothie bowl make this a perfect and filling fruity-break any time of day!

Their power shots are amazing and provide a great kick of energy and nutrients. I like the idea of shotting goodness! This turmeric and ginger concoction was just I needed to fight off a cold.

As I mentioned in my previous article, this place also does some really decent coffee with various kinds of 'mylk', my favourite being coconut!

3.Cafe Organic

I was staying nearby to their outlet on Petitenget, Seminyak, so this happened to be the first healthy cafe I went to. There's been a lot of hype surrounding Cafe Organic and I can see why. I visited a few times and their food is consistently excellent. Their range of kumbucha is particularly impressive.

A large menu selection for both vegans and vegetarians, plus they will easily swap out any of the items based on your preference, so it's easy to make something vegan. Here I swapped out eggs for a side of refried beans.

They also have an outlet in Canngu! Completely delicious with some pretty cool graffiti inside their Seminyak outlet.

Find out more about Cafe Organic on their instagram here.

4. Peloton Supershop

In an up and coming area of Canngu, set back of a main road you'll find the hipster cafe, Peloton Supershop. The food is decent and the drinks too! I would definitely recommend trying this plant-based cafe if you're in the area. It's a quiet working environment with excellent wifi, for those of you who are working remotely.
Their superfood salads are absolutely delicious and very filling, with separate sources - just how I like it!

This one came with a side of extra-garlicy gluten-free bread, but you could opt for rye instead.

And my favourite thing of all is the himalayan salt available on the table. It's the little things, you know ;-)

 4. Motion Cafe

Great for lunch, dinner or just an afternoon pick-me-up, Motion Cafe serves up healthy food, focussed on the paleo and vegan diets (strange combo, I know.. but stick with me here..)

I was drawn to this place for it's amazing range of drinks and at affordable prices too. If you want to try some cleansing juices or just a glass of kombucha, this is the place to come. This turmeric healer was a bit of a life saver after a week of work and no sleep! Just 30,000 and had about 5 glasses in the bottle. Worth a visit for the drinks alone.

For more info about Motion, see their instagram here.

5. Milk and Madu

Confession.. my phone ran out of battery so I didn't get any photos of the food!

Hidden down a side lane, just a stones throw away from Peloton Supershiop is Milk and Madu. You could easily miss it if you weren't paying attention so look out for the sign.

It isn't vegetarian only, but their menu is varied and adaptable. They have everything from eggs to burgers and from what I could see, they do most things very well. The pizzas are cooked to absolute perfection and they have plenty of meat and non-meat options.

Sorry no vegan pizzas here! But plenty of other vegan options!
If you love pizza as much as me then you'll want to come down on Tuesday when it's 2 for 1!

At the Canggu branch they have the famous Nalu Bowls on site, serving up some drool-worthy smoothie bowls.

Like these!

Milk & Madu has outlets in Canngu and Ubud. For more info, see their instagram here

What I like most about these 5 places is they aren't afraid to play with ingredients to serve up some truly delicious, healthy food which can accommodate multiple dietary requirements!

Other places worth trying are: Grocer and Grind in Seminyak - the best food in the area and much better than the overpriced cafe Sisterfields opposite The Spicy Coconut for the coffees, not so much the food and Thai & Co in Canngu for healthy thai food at a very affordable price!

Hope you enjoyed my 5 healthy eateries for Seminyak and Canngu. If you have anything to add please do let me know in the comments below!

You can def convince me with the food (and the swing hehe) to come to Bali... made pulled jackfruit the other day and it got me hooked. So good. Cambodia could learn a lot from bali... [laces like that would do well here.

I'm based in KL and I feel the same way. The food scene here has a long way to go. In Bali you can eat most places as a vegan! It's just so easy! I'm happy, but also sad that isn't a permanent reality! Haha.

Thanks so much! Really appreciate it!!

Argh, I miss Bali so much! Canggu is one of my favourite places. Haven't been there for 2 years, but I still think about Betelnut and Le Petit Prince (heard it's closed).

Yes it's closed, but Betelnut is still going strong! You should definitely head back because it's changed a lot in the past 2 years. :-) Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Probably will this year, if we're heading to Lombok. We're at Koh Lanta now, then Bangkok in March and Vietnam in May. So probably Bali in Q3. :)

Wow so much travel!! Will you be at the next event on 24th Feb btw? If so i'll see you there? :-)

Oh my...you got me at the halloumi bowl already! Looks delicious and good work for discovering all of these - will be mad handy when I go to Bali :-)

Thanks again Ings! Eating my way through Bali wasn't so bad ;-)
