Scientists have long believed that organisms adapt their behavior and function according to the time of day in a circadian manner. It is believed to be based on the motion in plants, leaves and flowers. For example, the leaves of Mimosa open during the day and close at night.
The question now arises as to whether behavior in plants and organisms is guided by an inner clock or is merely a response to an external stimulus of circadian nature. This debate continued for decades. Eventually in the twentieth century the fact was established that all creatures have a Syracadian clock. The device of estimating time in the body of organisms, acting according to biological clock and biological clock, was named as 'circadian rhythm'.
This clock also controls the actions of our body cells from waking up to sleep. Constant discoveries have shown how plants, animals, and humans follow their internal biological clock, so that they can adapt to the Earth's orbit. What changes occur at the molecular level in the body of organisms due to which the organisms are able to keep pace with the speed of the Earth. Now scientists have discovered the gene controlling the biological clock. For this research, scientists chose fruit fly. While experimenting on fruit fly, they found that a gene directs synthesis of a specific protein. At night, it is collected as protein and is used during the day. Apart from this, they also discovered some other proteins which are helpful in this process.
But some questions were still unresolved. The most prominent question was, who regulates the frequency of origin of these proteins with the day poles? Michael Young discovers a new gene associated with the bio clock. The protein generated from this gene called 'double time' was called DBT. The function of the DBT protein was to reduce the speed of aggregation of the PER protein. After the detection of this gene, it has become almost possible to understand the functioning of the 24-hour biological clock. The 2017 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physics has been awarded for the discovery of the molecular basis of biological clock.
We now know that all multicellular organisms, including humans, have the same mechanism of control of biocular cohesion. A large number of our genes are controlled by the biological clock, and as a result, carefully calibrated biochemic rhythms adapt our function to different parts of the day. After this discovery biochemistry has changed into a wide and extremely dynamic research area related to our health such that disturbances in the biological clock affect the action of the brain.
This can cause stress, personality disorders, effects on cognitive function, memory loss as well as neurological problems. There is also an increased risk of pain, metabolic diseases and cancer. Every person's body clock is slightly different, which is between 22 hours to 25 hours. That is, it is not necessary that having a 24-hour day on earth does not mean that the body also considers it to be 24 hours. The average body clock is 24.5 hours. Those who wake up early in the morning have a body clock of 22 hours and those who wake up late have a body clock of 25 hours. Meaning that those who wake up around 5 am, their body clock is completed in 22 hours instead of 24 hours.
Sunlight helps our body clock harmonize with the 24-hour cycle of the world. This means that in the morning when one is exposed to sunlight, the body clock is as fast. At the same time, the body clock runs slow even when exposed to sunlight during the evening.
