EFFECT OF THIRD-HAND SMOKE

Did you ever enter a room and wonder why it smelled like a dirty ashtray when there wasn't a cigarette in sight?

Even if you choose to smoke outside of your home, or only smoke in your home when your children are not there, you're still exposing them to toxins, the researchers called "third-hand" smoke.

When you smoke, toxic particulate matter from tobacco smoke gets into your hair and clothing. When you come into contact with your baby, your child comes in contact with those toxins, even if you're not smoking at the time.

By now most everyone is aware of the risks of second-hand smoke. Children who grow up with smokers in their homes are three times more likely to develop lung cancer in their later years than those children who come from non-smoking homes. And children who breathe second-hand smoke are more likely to suffer from pneumonia, bronchitis and other lung diseases, while those who have asthma and who breathe second-hand smoke have more asthma attacks.

Babies crawl on carpets, sleep on couches, and teeth on household and other porous objects, all of which may be invisibly dirtied with third-hand smoke toxins. The sick and elderly, both with compromised immune systems. Children are at most risk from third hand smoke - which sticks to DNA and can cause cancerous tumors - as, due to their small size, are more vulnerable to effects of the substance.

ATTN: Smokers, save your lungs AND your wallet!

To help minimize their risks while you’re getting healthy and working your way up to quitting smoking, you can:

• Smoke only outdoors (this will prevent a large share of smoke particles from settling into your home or car)
• Change your clothes after smoking, and wash your clothing right away, or at the very least air it out outside thoroughly
• Wash your hands after smoking
• Ideally, wash your hair after you smoke, especially if you have an infant that will be in close proximity to you
• Use a high-quality air purifier in your home to help remove excess toxins

it is so hard to get away from it but with proper help and guidance and perseverance from smoker it self, it can be done.

from a former smoker: @psychkrhoz

I remember in my teens going out to pubs and discos and coming home with hair and clothes smelling of tobacco.

There are lots of smokers in that places and becomes progressively more toxic.

Hahahah. I can relate with your expereince sir colin and when your mom will wash your clothes she would smell and ask if you're smoking. Hahahaha

really useful information. sometimes we forget the small things actually matter even if we dont think so.

Yeah I agree! Exposing your children or loved ones to second- or third-hand smoke is clearly not optimal for their health.

.i remembr my late papa used to smoke and died 4yrs. ago he's a smoker also and now im thankful dt none of us his five siblings is a smoker like him... smokers should quit smoking to save lives...thanks for sharing dis.😊

That's good to hear. My papa is a change smoker too, he stopped smoking when he gets sick.

Despite smoking packets telling them not to smoke it’s more on an addiction than anything really. It’s the addiction that’s killing them.

I agree! The worst thing are they can still afford to buy even they know that smoking cigarettes is so expensive.

That’s how you know an addiction, they will go to far lengths to achieve what they want to.

And that's addiction can kill someone.

And continues to smoke despite health problems.

Smoking does not benefit anyone really. It's deadly.

I dunno why the government still allowed the manufacturer produce this unhealthy product.

Smoking doesn't do any good at all. 😢 And can even do more harm on other people.

They are the worst creature on earth and the one to blame why we cannot have clean air because of them.

Very useful article @riyuwe.

Thank you a lot Ma'am Marla 😊😊

Smoking is really dangerous to one's health! Thanks to your post it adds more info! Upvoted, commented and resteemed by rubelynmacion

Yep i agree! But we cannot force the smokers to stop they get serious disease problem.

There was a recent debate about this topic, laws coming out that people must stand at least 5 meters away from doorways before smoking, so everyone who smokes now shares that with people walking down pavements (point raised, why take a lunch time walk, to join every smoker in town's smoke)?

Debate did however also highlight many smokers do so to keep their weight down, others reduce taking drugs to stay calm (which also have side affects).

Was very fashionable to smoke for many years then big corporations got on board and cigarettes where filled with toxins that made the cigarette lethal (I do not know enough facts to substantiate this).

My honest opinion, it is your choice to make, it is your constitutional right to do what you wish, not only mentioning cigarettes, which partner you select in life, what you wear, what you drink, it is all up to you....

e-Cigarettes and vaping are just as lethal, so don't fall into that trap either. Just Thinking Aloud

Yep, that's true! Although most countries put age restrictions on its use, over a billion adults smoke tobacco legally every day, and supplying this demand is big business.

Everyone knows how dangerous cigarettes can be, and yet, society still tolerates its use. While some cities have banned its use in public, many more still don’t do enough to quell its use. 😔😔😔😔

Ha ha @riyuwe I just had to reflect on what they debating over here.

Actually too many heavy drinkers, road accidents, crime to worry more about than cigarette smokers.

Terrifying drugs made at home killing our youth is called "Whoonga" (Nyoape) a fine white powder can be made up from anything from rat poison, heroin, detergent powder, anti-retro-viral drugs, milk powder, pool cleaner to bicarbonate of soda. Highly addictive and a killer.

This is a crazy world we live in, sometimes very sad to see and hear what is going on.
