I am much better off than millions of people who live in South Africa, and surely many millions more across the globe.
I own a house in the small coastal neighbourhood of Fish Hoek in the city of Cape Town. I live only a few minutes walk from a lovely white beach and azure ocean, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.
When I arrive home from a day out, I drive in through an automated spiked metal fence. I make sure it closes behind me before I get out of the car. The house has anti-burglar bars on every single window as well as a steel security gate on every single door.
There's an alarm system linked to an armed response team. I have several 'panic buttons' hidden in my house, in the hope that I could reach it before being stabbed or clubbed or hacked to death, or all of the above during a seemingly imminent burglary.
I find it unacceptable that I am much better off than millions of South Africans! How will we ever escape this self perpetuating cycle of hatred and violence that produces only poverty and misery.
Have a look at the screen grabs of some of the newsfeed of some of the reported crimes committed in my small community during the past few days.
Tonight my heart is broken for this beautiful f*#cking 5h1thole of a country of mine.
