The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 3, DTube Video #3

in #hebrew7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to my DTube Hebrew reading & language series.

The full study is now on line covering the Alef-Beyt here in my blog. This is a beginners program to teach letters, vowels, and reading. The vowels are marked in this bible and are designed to help avoid confusion on what a word is and how it is pronounced. The confusion is obvious in the hundreds of interpretations globally. In modern Hebrew, only children need a niqqud or vowel marking for each letter. Old manuscripts also usually have vowels marked.

We are reading Genesis 3:7-9

Here we have the first of the many consequences of the fall. Their eyes were opened and they knew (found out) that they were naked. Then they tried to cover themselves and ended up hiding when they heard God walking in the "wind" of the day, wind and spirit are the same word in Hebrew.

I have always wondered why God was never mentioned again as walking anywhere as we go on from here. Curious.

The word wind is marked in the reading below. The rest of the markings are related to pronouns, this week we see how they/them fit into words.

In English, the subject pronoun is they, which is usually followed by some action.

See the second line: they knew

The object comes after the action or after a preposition

They knew that (there was) nakedness of them.

Translation does not always work, so to speak. Simply stated, the verb "to be" is rarely used in Hebrew compared to other languages. This impacts other things.

Each of the markings below has a subj. or an obj. near them.
Subjects are the ones doing the action. Objects are the ones impacted by the action or preposition.

Ex:
Ned and Dan love - - SBD's inside wallets.
subj. and subj. verb - obj. prep. obj.

They save them in - them.
subj. verb obj. prep. obj.

Today's reading

From the top

An explanations of the markings made above.

The tav (Ti or Tee) is they (they opened)

  • this tav refers to the "eyes" (next word)
  • the "nah" at the end gives the meaning of suddenly.

...of the two of them (Sh'nay-hem), and them is the obj. of the prep. "of"

They (vav) knew that (there was) nakedness of them (hem)
They (vav) sewed...
They (vav) made...
... for them (hem), and them is the obj. of the prep. "for"
They (vav) heard...

Great to see you to keep posting Hebrew lessons. There are so many great steemiens leaving steemit. The traffic has decreased sooo much recently. Your lessons are always refreshing. Thank you and please keep posting.
BTW: Vav knew that there was...

I have been here for almost two years and posting is a habit. I do not really know how to gauge traffic, but I have noticed that my voting power has been lasting longer. Thanks for your continued support.

Interesting how similar the word naked is to the Hebrew word for serpent... Nachash

Posted using Partiko iOS

Old English nacod, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch naakt and German nackt, from an Indo-European root shared by Latin nudus and Sanskrit nagna .... in Sanskrit the word Nagas means serpent

Siempre muy aceptada su leccion hebrea, gracias por compartir cada semana tan interesante lectura.

It is always nice to read his publications about the word of God.
and it is a curious fact that after realizing that they were naked, it is not read again that God walks from one place to another in the world, it is as if we were hiding from that moment until the moment we saw him. shame. because it is clear that God continues among us at all times thanks for sharing his teachings that are always among us
