The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 5, Post #3

in #hebrew2 days ago

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 5:20-23

This is the last post for chapter five. We complete that chapter today as we tell the story of the people's disappointment as they were punished because Moshe (Moses) went and ordered that they be set free.

The people were upset that they would have to do double the work, getting their own straw to make bricks, and had to produce the same amount of bricks. They told Moshe, "God should look on you and be the judge because you have made us stink in the sight of Fare'oh (Pharaoh) and put the sword into his servants' hands to kill us."

Then Moshe turned to speak with God telling him that he had done evil to the people. He wonders why God had sent him to speak to the ruler. Then he he again accuses God of doing evil to the people after he had gone to Fare'oh speaking in God's name, and he finishes it with, "You have not delivered your people at all."

I remember the dialogue on the mountain several posts ago where God told him that he would harden Fare'oh's heart and do many miracles in order to get them free. This whole story always makes me question the short memory that the people have related to the things God does for them.

Today's reading

English

They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh; and they said to them, "The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."

Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all."
