I couldn't agree more. As a minnow (first 3 days)-- I am quickly seeing that comments are where the magic happens. I don't see why people waste the opportunity to add something valuable to a post -- instead they just say "Please follow me". Just because you act politely doesn't mean I will follow you! I just assume those comments are made by bots and don't reply.

Exactly. They are bot or at least they are thinking like bots. Someone made a comment below doing exactly what this post said not to do. How much you want to bet it happens again?
