Here is a partial list of techniques, from various sources, I used to give writing students to overcome block. The full list is on another hard drive and I'll dig it out:
Listen to some music that you really like.
Read something really bad. In your library you must have some book that is badly written. Read a bit of it.
Read part of one of your favorite books of all time.
Do not worry about your lead paragraph much at first, since you'll probably change it later anyway. Just start writing.
Begin by putting down some related ideas, or unrelated, and see if there are connections.
That's all I can remember on my first cup of coffee. I will add one that I did not tell students: smoke a joint, but only if it is legal in your country or state. :)
