My grandmother has often spoken about the herb gardens that everyone had when she was growing up in Normandy. City or farm, it didn't matter. Every lady had an herb garden.
It wasn't for the flowers. Though there usually was some! It wasn't for the vegetables... but there usually were a few. It was for the médecine traditionnelle or "natural medicine." Yes, it was for the cooking too. And for the flavors and the zest. It was for all of these things that even the poorest of the poor had at least a window ledge herb garden.
Today we are so dependent on the Grocery and the Doctor to blink an eye about getting our hands dirty. But we should. We should get our hands dirty with healthy living soil and the fragrant aroma of freshly bruised herbs. These herbs, freshly picked, carry bio nutrients and key natural chemicals that can fight of disease and help the body to heal.
I will not replicate information that is readily available. Here is one resource website where you can begin: https://www.americanherbalistsguild.com/herbal-medicine-fundamentals
If you think Gardening is too hard:
- Look to the herbs! Most are quite hardy or at least do a great job of reseeding themselves!
If you think you don't have the space:
- Look to the herbs! With as little as 2 feet by 6 inches you can grow enough herbs for two people, or as a supplement for a whole family.
If you think you don't have the time:
- Go to a good Nursery and run your hands through 3-4 of the more fragrant herbs. The saying shouldn't be stop and smell the roses... but stop and smell the rosemary... the thyme... the lavender! You will be willing to make thyme!!
There is plenty of time still to plan and get started for a full year of herbal goodness!
Choose a location that you pass everyday! Choose 3-5 herbs to start with, don't necessarily get over zealous. Learn about these few herbs; their needs and their benefits! Find a friend that has "out of control Mint" or some basil seeds saved from the year before. It is really very easy (and cheap) to get your herb garden started.
IF you do it right, YOU WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT ONE!
Good luck to you and have fun!
Tomorrow is going to be a beautiful and aromatic day!
I have had a garden before and it worked out pretty well, my parents like having fresh vegetables so that they don't have to go to the grocery store.

That is awesome! They are so great to have. I've gotten started on mine for this year, but not started any of the seed starts yet.
Will you be growing anything this year? Now is the time to start!
