I stayed at home when our children were born, however when the last one went to school I decided to go back to work after 15 years. I went and did a business course at the local Technical College with emphasis on computer studies.
With that certificate in my pocket I went job-hunting. Unfortunately the country was in a recession and we lived in a medium sized town, so my job hunt was not successful, and I looked for something that I could work at at home.

I decided on growing herbs. Getting out in the garden was absolutely great, I planted, weeded, watered, and experimented with herbal teas, for the family, bunches of herbs around the home and of course I never bought herbs for cooking, but used fresh herbs out of the garden.
My favourite herbs are
Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and Sweet Basil, lemon. Grow some Chives and you don't need onions. When someone has flu in the home I still squeeze lemon rind to freshen the home.

We have winter frost where we live and sweet basil dies in frost. The first year I was devastated when my basil died. The following year I brought the basil inside during the winter and put it out in the sun during the day. The fragrances of the herbs enchanted me, so that led to aromatherapy. Rose petals - I spread our dining table full of rose petals to dry, bunches of herbs were hanging from the rafters. It was essential oils, fixatives, star anise, ginger etc. The memories still make me smile now.
I'll write more in another post of the things I have done.
