Finding Secret Corners of the Wilderness

in #hiking4 years ago

Not too far from my corner of the woods there is a secret spot, only known to a few locals and passed down by word of mouth to the few.

To get there you have to drive two hours from the big city to a tiny little logging town. From there it's another hour up to the most beautiful gem of a lake with the most crystal clear water you've ever seen. After that it's another two hour drive to the north end of the lake and then another 30 minutes on old forest service roads cut by loggers a hundred years ago or more.

Then you hike two miles, fording a stream once, and then clambering over rocks.

But when you get there. This.

The icy waters in this stream plunge down from the tops of the mountains, slide over the smooth granite rock, and eventually spill into the lake below.

Part of this slick rock makes a fantastic natural water slide and it draws hundreds of locals who come to play and bask in the beauty.

Do you have any secret spots in your corner of the world?

Beautiful!
If I had a secret spot, I wouldn't tell anyone. :)
With billions of people on the planet and only so many "ideal" or amazing locations, it's inevitable that millions of us live in the Midwest (cold cold cold winters) - or Idaho (your winters are no better than ours!) - that animated movie "The Emperor's New Groove" should have been more popular, with its message of how the guy who owns a great piece of land is at risk of having it usurped by someone with more power and money (the emperor, in this case).
America was a well-kept secret until Columbus and whoever else spread the word....
