In ancient times , one custom was important for the whole world who celebrated cult of God Apollo . We will go by the same lane , as Hyperboreans did many times .
Old custom was sending each year to the temple of Apollo in island Delos , a gift from their first harvest . They wrapped these gifts in straw , and sent them to Delos with delegation which traveled to the holy places on their destination .
So , they traveled down Oceanos Potamos ( river Istru , Danube in modern times ), all the way to the Black sea .
Then they crossed the Marmaras sea .
Next part was crossing Aegean sea ,
right to Dodona in Epirus , on Peloponesus peninsula ,
very old religious centre of the Balkan Pelasgians .

After celebrations in Dodona , delegation crossed Thessaly and over Eubea island , and from there they continued again the trip to Delos on water , to Cyclades .
Now short brake in this story . Imagine trip from central Europe to Ciclades today , on water and the land . It is long road , with many problems , even today , dangerous on many places . Modern traveler could find old adventure , challenges , pure joy in discovering old Apollo’s cult road .
In the beginning , after moving cult centre to Delos from Snake island in Black sea , Hyperboreans sent to Delos with these gifts two virgins Hyperoche and Laodice .
To ensure their safety they sent during one year five men with them , called Perpheres ( bringers of gifts ), and whom everybody treated with honor . But once , during one year this delegation sent to Delos didn’t return home and Hyperborean were affected and afraid that it could happen again in the future . So they introduce new custom to bring the holy gifts to the boundary of their country , where they asked their neighbors to hand them on , from people to people , until they reached Delos .
Many years after the first two virgins , Hyperboreans sent new delegation , another two virgins Arge and Opis , who had traveled together with Lithia – procesia . Final destination was festival Delia , dedicated to Apollo , lord and the king , one of the most important festivals , where priests and visitors were dressed in white clothes , and the whole festival was one week long dances , prays , singing .
If you go one day and visit Delos , magical island , a link between underground and upper world , try to see and hear old shadows left there after festivals Delia . And remember old rule , any female couldn’t die on Delos , animal or human . Except virgins Arge and Opis , whose grave was found there in XX th century , on the same place where Herodotus , father of history , was writing about .
Delos was the world cult centre .
