1770 - Captain James Cook, along with naturalist Joseph Banks, aboard the HMS Endeavour land at Botany Bay in eastern Australia

1789 - The now infamous mutiny on the Bounty takes place against its captain William Bligh in the South Pacific

1923 - Wembley Stadium, is opened to the public, the first turf was cut by King George V

1945 - Benito Mussolini and his mistress are executed by Italian partisans

1947 - The Kon Tiki expedition, led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, sets sail from Peru to Polynesia
