1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte proclaimed Emperor of France by the French Senate.
Born in 1769 in Corsica to minor nobility, he served as an artillery officer in the French Army. He later became a military leader who rose to prominence and led several successful campaigns during the French Revolution. He was proclaimed Emperor of France as Napoleon I from 1804 until 1814 and again briefly in 1815 during the Hundred Days after his escape from Elba. His reign is often considered to be the "greatest codification of laws since the fall of the Roman Empire"
He is depicted in pop culture as a small petty tyrant and appears in many popular works of fiction both contemporary and modern. Appearing in both the written word and stage and film. He even has his own desert.
