Teuku Umar Johan Pahlawan was born in 1854 in Meulaboh, precisely at Gampong Masjid, now Gampong Rear, Kecamatan Johan Pahlawan. On February 10, 1899 at Keudee Lhok Bubon, Teuku Oemar along with his troops set up an attack plan against the Dutch in Tangsi Meulaboh. Teuku Umar moved along the coast with his troops from Lhok Bubon to Meulaboh on the evening of 11 February 1899. Before continuing his journey to attack Tangsi Meulaboh, the Dutch troops who had been on alert opposite Suak Ujong Kalak opened fire.
The Teuku Umar army was besieged. Teuku Umar was seen holding his bloodied chest. Dutch bullet lodged in his left breast and colon. Immediately the shoot-out stopped. The atmosphere became quiet and each troop resigned without firing a shot.
The body of Teuku Umar was taken away by his loyal followers to Pucok Luung inland Suak Raya, and through Reudeup was brought back to Pasi Meungat Tanjong Meulaboh to be buried near his mother's grave. Six months later, worried about the Dutch, the community unloaded Teuku Oemar tomb to be buried in Gunong Meulintang (Cot Manyang) Mugo. His struggle was continued by Cut Nyak Dhien, which is headquartered in the northern part of Meulaboh right in the Krueng Manggi area around Krueng Meureubo.
