23 जनवरी का दिन हर वर्ष नेता जी सुभाषचन्द्र बोस की
जयन्ती के रूप में मनाया जाता है। उनके प्रशस्तिगान में किसी
प्रकार की कमी नहीं रहती । भाषणों से स्टेज गूंजते हैं और लेखों
से अखबार सजते हैं । नेता जी की स्मृति को अमर बनाये रखने
के लिये अनेक संस्थाएँ जन्म ले चुकी हैं । भारत सरकार ने भी
उनकी अमरकीर्ति को दृष्टिगत रखते हुए उनके नाम से
डाक-टिकट जारी किये और देश के सर्वोच्च एवं सर्वोत्तम अवार्ड
भारत-रत्न से उन्हें सम्मानित किया । 23 जनवरी 1897 को
कटक (उड़ीसा) के जानकीनाथ भवन में जन्में नेता जी इस वर्ष
121 के हो चुके हैं
वे जन्म से ही मेधावी थे । 1915 में वे गंभीर रूप से बीमार
रहे और उसी वर्ष दी गई एम.ए. की परीक्षा में वे सर्वप्रथम रहे ।
1916 में जब उन्होंने प्रेसीडेन्सी कालेजकलकत्ता में प्रवेश लिया
तो उसी वर्ष भारत के प्रति दुर्वचन कहने वाले अंग्रेज अध्यापक
ईएफ. औटन को थप्पड़ मारा । दर्शन में उनकी रूचि थी अतः
1919 में एम.ए. दर्शनशास्त्र) में उन्हें प्रवेश लेते देखा गया ।
अगस्त 1920 में उन्होंने आईसी.एसपरीक्षा पास की और
अप्रैल 1921 में आईसीएस. से त्यागपत्र भी दे दिया । 1919
में लंदन में ही उन्होंने लोकमान्य तिलक से भेंट की थी । संभवतः
इसी मेंट के बाद वे अपना भावी पथ निश्चित कर चुके थे।
अध्यात्म और समाज सेवा में उनकी रूचि प्रारंभ से ही थी ।
1914-15 में उन्हें रामकृष्ण मिशन के स्वामी ब्रह्मानन्द जी से
अध्यात्म चर्चा करते हुए तथा 1916 में कटक में हैजा पीड़ितों
की सेवा करते देखा जा सकता है जबकि उस समय उनकी आयु
18-19 वर्ष की थी। 1921 में वे लंदन से भारत लौटे और
कलेवाडा कांग्रेस सम्मेलन में सहभागी बन कर राजनीति में प्रवेश.
किया । 1922 में स्वराज पार्टी में सक्रिय होकर ‘फारवर्डपत्र
के व्यवस्थापक बने। मार्च 1924 में कलकत्ता महापालिका के
कार्यकारी अधिकारी बने और वेतन में से आधी राशि लेना ही
स्वीकार किया । बंगाल अध्यादेश के विरोध में बंदी होकर मांडले
जेल गये । जेल में होने वाले दुर्यवहार के विरूद्ध जनवरी 1926
में उपवास रखा जो नेताओं के आग्रह पर 4 मार्च 1926 को
तोड़ा। मई 1927 में जेल से रिहा हुए और 1928 में बंगाल।
प्रान्तीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष बने । फरवरी 1938 में कांग्रेस के।
हरिपुर अधिवेशन की अध्यक्षता की । इसी वर्ष राष्ट्रीय योजना
समिति के संयोजक बने । जनवरी 1939 में त्रिपुरी कांग्रेस में।
अध्यक्ष निर्वाचित हुए ।
