RE: Hidden History: The Sinking Of The Lancastria, A True Story Told Through The Eyes Of My Grandad

in #history7 years ago

"Lankastriya". Ocean liner with a displacement of 16 tons 243 — one of the best in the British Navy. Built in 1922 and originally called "Tirannia". In February 1924, renamed that, according to widespread among English sailors believed that is a bad omen. Served TRANS-Atlantic line, made cruises in the Mediterranean sea. After the outbreak of the second world war was used as a military transport. Participated in the evacuation of British troops, first from Norway and then from France. At the time of a RAID by Nazi bombers in the district of Saint-Nazaire aboard the "Lancastria" was a total of about nine thousand people — mostly soldiers, but also a large number of civilians, including women and children.
