Mansa Musa which translates to Emperor/Sultan Musa was the tenth emperor of the Mali Empire. At his time of ascension to the title of Mansa, the Mali Empire consisted of lands which are now part of the modern day Mauritania and most of Mali. During his reign, he conquered twenty four more cities, adding them and their surrounding estates to his already massive empire. But none of that accounts for why he is regarded as the richest man in history.
The Mali Empire at the time was the largest producer of gold. This alone was enough to boost his empire financially but noting that it was a point in time when gold was in high demand worldwide, Mansa Musa's chests and coffers were more than overfilled.
Like all devout muslims, Mansa Musa went on pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca. He traveled through Timbuktu and Gao on his way there and conquered them on his way back. He then proceeded to build his palace and establish Timbuktu as a center of trade. The city brought attracted traders from Egypt, Hausaland and other African empires. News of the trade center got to Spain and it was also added to their maps as a point for gold procurement.
Mansa Musa grew the economy of his people to heights unseen and is forever known as the richest man in history.
