•Located in the island of Delos one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece.
•The lions faced East towards the Sacred Lake of Delos where it's believed the Greek sun god Apollo had been born.
🦁The original row probably contained 12 stone lions that were built around 600 BCE by the people of Naxos in honor of the god Apollo.
•The five remaining lion statues are marble replicas, and the actual figures have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Delos.
•The lions, with their mouths open as if roaring or snarling, were meant to guard the sanctuaries and to inspire a feeling of divine fear among the worshippers.
• How they were positioned is similar to the way sphinxes were set up along avenues in ancient Egypt.
•Delos was included in the UNESCO World's Cultural Heritage List of Cultural Landscapes and Archaeological Remains in 1990.
