POLISH HEROS #1 (Witold Pilecki 1901-1948) (ENG)

Witold Pilecki (1901-1948) - Polish soldier, cavalry captain. He was a participant of the September 1939 campaign and co-organized the underground Secret Military Organization, which in 1943 was incorporated into the structures of the Home Army.

In 1940, on orders from his superiors, he provoked his arrest by the Gestapo and went to Auschwitz. He stayed in the camp until 1943. Threatened by de-inspiration, he made a successful attempt to escape. Then he was active in Kedywo, ie the Directorate of the Diversion of the Home Army Headquarters. He took part in the Warsaw Uprising, commanded one of the units of the Chrobry II grouping.

After the fall of the uprising, he was taken to German captivity, he was in Lamsdorf (Łambinowice) and Murnau. After the end of World War II he was assigned to the 2nd Polish Corps. In December 1945 he was sent to Poland to organize underground anti-communist structures.

He was arrested on May 8, 1947, tortured and brought to justice, inter alia on charges of preparing an attack on the lives of high security officers. Sentenced to death and executed on May 25, 1948.
