Today back in 1948, a famous political and spiritual leader in India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic (Nathuram Vinayak Godse) in the compound of Birla House (a large mansion in central New Delhi).
The assignation happened as Gandhi walked up the low steps to the raised lawn behind Birla House where he conducted his multi-faith prayer meetings every evening. Gandhi instantly fell to the ground as Godse stepped out from the crowd firing three bullets at point-blank range. Gandhi was carried back to his room in Birla house where some time later he was pronounce dead.
