There is a story in the community saying that the name 'Deli' is taken from the name of a place called Deli Tua, which was once the center of the Aru Kingdom. However, based on the delegate Sultanate Deli, the sultanate was named so because Sri Paduka Gocah hero indeed came from an area named Delhi in India. Indeed, the story of Sri Paduka Gocah herofigures is widely spread in the community and is told generations by word of mouth, of course this way will cause many different versions. But most people do agree that Sri Paduka Gocah hero is a Muslim and stranded on the coast of Aceh, who later became the warlord of the kingdom. This proves the truth of the delegate sultanate Deli which says that the name of Deli comes from the name of the place where Sri Paduka Gocah hero.
On August 26, 1888, the Deli sultanate was moved to the capital of North Sumatra Province, namely the city of Medan. After being transferred, in the city then Maimun Palace began to be built at the time of government under the authority of the 8th Sultan of Deli, namely Sultan Mahmud Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah, the eldest son of Sultan Mahmud Perkasa Alam, the founder of Medan. The reason for the transfer is because the Deli Sultanate area previously was in the lowlands so that frequent flooding due to high tide.

The 2772 building and about 4.5 hectares of yard is located at Brigadier General Katamso Street, Sukaraja Sub district, Medan Maimun Sub-district.
