Sarnath The holy place of Gautam Buddha (U.P. India)

This huge stupa located in Sarnath is 13 km away from Varanasi. It was constructed in 500 AD in place of a stupa and several other monuments built by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. In fact, Emperor Ashoka made many stupas during his reign. In these stupas, the signs associated with Gautama Buddha were kept. There is also an Ashok Colony nearby.


It is believed that Dhekh stupa located in Deer Park is the place where Lord Buddha gave his first preaching to his disciples after getting knowledge. This is where he told the concept of Arya Ashtanga Marg, on which the person can achieve liberation. This stupa was raised six times. Despite this, its upper part remained incomplete.

A Chinese traveler, Juan Zhang, visited Sarnath in the fifth century. He wrote that at that time there were more than 1,500 Dharmacharyas in the colony and the main stupa was about 300 feet high.
