Line handling is done both pier side and underway. Pier line handling is done when a ship comes into the port and berths at a pier. Civilian or service members from other ships will be standing by to receive the mooring lines from the ship, note the photo above.
Sailors will be called up to do replenishment line handling underway. This means sailors will stand on deck for hours during the replenishment, slinging cargo on aboard deck and pulling fuel lines across the replenishment and the receiving ship.
Hand over hand.
A video produced in the 1980's, while dated, provides the same basic training required for today's line handlers. The same risks of snap back, while minimized, exist today. Learn what you are doing, the line can kill you or your fellow shipmates.

MEEP! MEEP!
