Slave trade, either through the #Atlantic or the #Pacific Ocean was the worst dehumanising treatment meted on humans. Superiority of race, from time immemorial has been the major cause of this illegitimate trade. In this assesment, I would like to take a look at this theme from the #African/ #Nigerian perspective.
Slavery is as old as the existence of man. Although, it is illegal in countries of the modern world, it exists and even more degrading than what existed during the trans-atlantic slave trade. In 1805(early 19th Century), slave trade was official abolished. And as a result, it becomes anoffence to posses humans as property.
After the abolishment of slave trade, and the IndustrialRevolution in Europe, human labour became unpopular as machines were more productive. The streets of Europe and America was crowded with black slaves and slaves of other origin, there was highbrate criminal activities as slaves have to fend for themselves. This was the reason why many of the ex-slaves were bundled and carted from Europeband dumped at Serra-Leone and other slaves who were taken from America were dumped in Liberia.
.
Initially, in the mid 15th century, some slaves from northern Mauritania were taken to Portugal. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to have had contact with sub-Saharan Africa. They arrived at the Gold Coast (Ghana), built the Elmina Castle. Sometimes around 1510, slaves were shipped like ordinary marketable commodities through Spain to Spanish territories in South America.
EFFECTS OF SLAVE TRADE ON AFRICAN SOCIETIES
√ Gross depopulation of African societies
√Decline in the development of lock industries.
√Excommunication of the working population they were the major point of the trade.
√ Death of many young and promising talents.
MODERN FORMS OF SLAVERY
•Marital and sexuak slavery
•Child slavery
•Women trafficking
•Serfdom
•Bonded labour or debt bondage.
Sources estimates has reached over #2million people as diverse from Nigeria, Indonesia and Brazil who live in worse conditions of slavery. In actual fact, there are few or no organization or individual who comment about the unholy trade of human beings.
REASONS WHY SLAVERY PERSISTS
∆ poverty
∆Corruption and crime
∆Lack of anti-slave laws per country
∆Lack of alternatives
∆Lack of effectively enforced international laws against slavery
∆ Over- population
∆Emmigration
MODERN SLAVERY AND NEOCOLONIALISM
globalisation is one factor that has changed by the face of slavery in world market. Some of the modern slavery system are not actually seen as slavery in the face of the victim. I would just take some time to list some of the modern methods of slavery.
• Brain drain
•Visa Lottery
•Internatiinal borrowing
•Racism
•ICJ
