What is a valkyrie's concept from Norse mythology?

in #history7 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone!

Today I want to represent one of mystical creatures from Norse/ Scandinavian mythology, some history that I mentioned in my previous post.
I guess most of people have ever heard the name of valkyrie. It is often used in many works, like movies, books and etc. But what is a valkyrie? What is the concept of it?

First of all, valkyries are female spirits of carnage, war goddesses, that flies in the battleground using winged horses. They have an image of elegant, noble maidens bearing dead heroes to Valhalla. That is the hall where the god Odin houses the dead whom he deems worthy of dwelling with him. Valkyries also are the ones who help the god transporting his favorites men among those slain in battles to Valhalla. There they fights by the god's side.

Second interesting thing I’d like to mention is their love affairs with human men. It‘s strange how Norse mythology is focused on things like love and emotions. After all it is shown as an important part of life in every century or in every rase. It seems so simple but also so hard to comprehend.

As much as we know, valkyries are more sinister than they look. The reason why is that they choose who dies in battle and use magic to ensure it. They use intestines for their thread also severed heads for weights and even swords, arrows for beaters. It is used while chanting their intentions with ominous delight. What a powerful and twisted creature!

These creatures might be loving or bloodthirsty, but all in all they are a part of the extensive and dynamic complex which represents pre-Christian Germanic religion. But most important, valkyries are semi-distinct being of Odin for a larger being.

What is Your personal oppinion about these creatures? Do You like them? Or maybe You fear the? Maybe You would like to know more about them or maybe You can share some other information about it?

Thank You for Your time, I hope this post was entertaining and interesting for You!
