As many coins of the middle age , this one has been used as button.
On the Obverse ; AVE MARIA G and a squirrel

Why were coins used in those days as buttons? I would guess that sewing them to clothing was a good way to store them or hide them. Is this true? Did the holes decrease the value?
We are living in a civilisation of waste, but during the middle age the recycling and reparing was common, it was easier to make holes than buying new buttons.
