10 long live things carved on the wall Chimney.

If you could find something easily, it meaned that would be not so important.

Finally, I had arrived at the most important and meaningful spot in Gyeong Bok Goong tour. That is the 10 long live things carved on the wall chimney near the Queen mother's room.

It seemed that there were not so many people looking at this national treasure.

It is strange that there were no tourists in meaningful place usually not only in Gyeon Bok Goong but also in other places.

It is hard to understand for me why they had carved a this magnificent relief here.
The one who had carved a this relief would be an ordinary worker.
Nobody knows his name. But his work have survived today. So I visited here to see this chimney

For enjoying historical relics, your imagination power is essential.

With imagination, you could concentrate for the motive of worker's.
You could get into his mind and heart.

At that time, everybody knew what the life of the Queen would be.
Noble family wanted their daughter to be selected for the Queen.
Once selected, the selected family could get political power.
From time to time, this kinds of struggle for political power had resulted in the Death of Queen's family or even herself.

It would be exceptional case for the Queen to enjoy happy life in Choson Dynasty.

Some lost their parents and brothers, some lost their children, in some case the Queen herself could be excuted through the struggle for the political power.

So my imagination is that the worker had made a relief with a pray of long live for the Queen mother who had survived through political struggle

Then, let's look at one by one.

this is believed as a dragon

cranes, left and right side of the dragon.

elephant ?

left part

right part

trees and flowers

animals and birds

This 10 long live thing carved was designated as the National Treasure.

But it was sorry it seemed not to be protected properly as it's importance.

These are very beautiful photos, @slowwalker, of the bas relief near the Queen mother's room.

As is often the case, tourists want to see well-known artifacts and don't seem interested in the recondite and often more meaningful things.

You took the time to study the figures depicted in relief on the chimney to see what they could tell you.

Those carvings are there for a purpose. They remind me of a Bible verse: The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

This beautifully carved relief is part of Koreans' heritage and should be appreciated.

The dragon of course symbolizes the king - his power and his royalty.

A dragon was thought to be born of the union between a phoenix and crane.

Among the birds and animals depicted I noticed deer. Deer were often associated with pine trees and longevity.

There are too many flowers, birds and animals to denote the significance of each but many of these figures were considered holy and spiritual and bore a hidden significance.

It is a case of one culture speaking to another - one generation still wanting to have a voice.

You are right, @slowwalker. It would be tragic to ignore the hidden mysteries contained in these beautiful reliefs.

your commrnts are always touching me.
you are an real writer

thank you, @slowwalker .I appreciate that :)

the post and very nice work

Imagine how much time it took to hand carve each one of those. Then the perfectly mount them inside that wall.

Some of those have a lot of beauty to them. I see that some of them look like they're deteriorating. Hopefully they can find a way to preserve them forever.

thank you for your comment.
as you said, some measures must to be done

Thank you for sharing, you have written a very good article, this is very useful in introducing your country tourism potential.

I am very inspired to write about the history of my country, as you have been doing @slowwalker

I always ask my self this question when seeing such patterns, how were the ancient people doing this? Where they got the imagination from? What were they trying to say with these carvings?
So many questions in my head but really awesome work!

Amazing carving. Each carving has its own story. Thanks for sharing @slowwalker

These are truly beautiful carvings. It is a shame that more people don't see them. They are very old and need to be preserved for future generations. This was definitely a tribute and a prayer for the queen's life. Thank you for sharing this.

Slowwalker do you think there's some sort of message in the images the artist included? It's really beautiful work.

I think @jhonjgeddes explained that message better than me

Beautiful!

Nice! What a fantastic art work. Thanks for sharing.

How many decades ago? :)

This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing :)

Quite amazing how much detail is in these carvings considering the material they are carved into is so unforgiving. Throughly enjoyed the article and pictures - thank you for sharing.

As it is said, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I would further say beauty lies in the eyes of the photographer. So many achievers have left this world without a trace. The one who carved these also seemed to have left this world unknown.

Rare beauty, friend @slowwalker! Congratulations!
Thanks for the interesting info!
