Digging Trash: Update: BTC wallet.dat found

in #history10 days ago

Greetings, everyone!

Seven days ago I wrote about an old wallet file that had leftover Satoshi in it. The file was encrypted, but luckily I had the password. This was an address I used to collect small giveaways, so it was composed of many small transactions. I installed the Bitcoin Core wallet, allowing you to interact directly with the blockchain, and I started synchronizing. Man... it took forever, also because I did not want to keep all the Bitcoin history on my disk, but I adopted a sync and replace strategy, which maintained only the latest XX blocks.

The big unknown was, of course, the amount of fee needed for a transfer. The minimum amount is 1000 Satoshi per kilo byte of data added to the chain. The way Bitcoin works means that when a transfer is made, the history of the amounts is included in the new transaction. As my 0.00577664 BTC was composed of many little pieces, I feared that the size might be higher than the value of the wallet.

But I was happy to be wrong. The transaction required 19.56 kB of data, and I was impressed to see it confirmed quite quickly, considering that I only paid the minimum fee. The amount is now in my Binance account, and I only had to pay a $20.42 USD fee.

Nice! I'm looking now to buy some HIVE...

I have a few more old hard drives used with my old mining rig. Now, I'm on a mission to find them and find more surprises...

Good luck then!!!!

I am glad that the fees weren't as high as you thought they would. Good luck with your other harddrives and I hope you get back a lot of BTC.
