Ham bread is a food that many of us enjoy, and we usually eat it during the Christmas season, since it is a tradition that we Venezuelans have.
I remember when I was little, my parents always bought it at the Spanish Bakery, or YeYe companies, which was where I worked until recently, the truth is that they make quality breads, and I do not say that because I worked there, but because it is the reality.
On December 24 of this year 2024, we decided to make a homemade ham bread, the one who had the idea was my sister Maryhec Santos, which likes to do various activities, including crafts, drawing, and cooking, which is very passionate about what she does.
The ingredients we used were as follows.
For the dough:
- 500 gr of wheat flour
- 250 ml milk
- 50 grams of butter
- 50 grams of sugar
- 25 grams of fresh yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
For the filling:
- 500gr Smoked ham
- 120gr Bacon
- 40 gr of raisins
- 50 gr of stuffed green olives
- 35 gr of butter
- Papelón or panela (30 to 40gr)
First, pour the 250 ml of milk in a container, add the 25 grams of fresh yeast, beat it and let it stand for about 15 minutes.
In a bowl or a sufficiently large container, place the 500gr of wheat flour.
Then we add the milk with the yeast that we let stand a moment ago, and we also add the 50 grams of butter, 50 grams of sugar, the teaspoon of salt, 1 egg, and we knead until all the ingredients are incorporated uniformly.

The next step is to let the dough rest for approximately 1 hour, we must place a cloth that covers the entire container.
After we have let the dough rest for the corresponding time, we will see it with more volume, as we can see in the following image.
With the help of a rolling pin we begin to gently stretch the dough, until it is completely flat, and once it is stretched we proceed to cut the edges, so that it has square and symmetrical corners.
We grate 30 grams of paprika or panela on the stretched dough, then we place the 50 grams of olives rolled on one side of our dough, then we begin to place the 500 grams of smoked ham covering part of the dough, then we place the 120 grams of bacon and the 40 grams of raisins.
Then we proceed to cut the remaining dough into strips, so that when we roll the bread we give it a more presentable appearance.
We proceed to roll the dough of our rich bread, and then place the strips on top, very important, with the help of a fork we prick it at the top along the bread.
We look for the trays where we are going to place the breads, and we add butter and a little flour, to prevent them from sticking.
We pass them carefully to a tray and cover with a cloth for approximately 30 minutes.
After the 30 minutes have passed, beat an egg and brush all over the bread.
Preheat the oven to 180°, and place the loaves in the oven for 40 minutes. Some people, halfway through baking, quickly remove the loaves, paint them and place them back in the oven, in our case we did not do it that way.
Once our breads are out of the oven, they are ready to be enjoyed with the family.
