Feeding my teenager sucks. He doesn't want to eat anything nutritious I make. He calls it 'depression food'.
One thing he does want is lasagna which I'm really no good at making. So today I'll look at the macronutrient value of packaged lasagna to see if it meets the 25% minimum protein requirement.
Lasagna: 1kg tray for $4.99
Calories 990/tray
$10 to meet a 2000 calorie need for the day. Cheaper than eating at Burger King, but is it more nutritious?
From the nutritional information panel:
47G carb
8G Fat
19G Protein
or
188 calories carb
72 calories fat
76 calories protein
As percents :
56% Carb
21% Fat
23% Protein
Honestly, it did much better than I thought macronutrient wise. Close to 25% protein. Less fat calories than protein calories. Lots of carbohydrates but not totally out of line percentage wise.
Sure I have to look at lots of other nutritional factors (vitamins, minerals, etc) but at first glance.
Lasagna isn't a fail like fast food or sugary cereal. I'll keep it in reserve for my son as a meal that we both can live with.
