A married couple have been sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court over the female
genital mutilation (FGM) of their then 21-month-old daughter. A 37-year-old man and his 27-
year-old wife were jailed for five-and-a-half years and four years and nine months respectively. In November the couple pleaded not guilty to procuring an act of FGM on 16 September 2016, RTÉ reported. Their conviction was the first of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. The couple cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, who is now five. Sentencing the couple, Judge Elma Sheahan said the offence had resulted in serious harm to the child, who may suffer psychological or psycho-sexual effects in the future.

My question here remains, is the couple really ignorant of the fact that what they've done could cause the child some serious issues in the future? Im thinking someone might have put them up this, maybe their religious practice or whatever. I hope they learn their lessons

Do these people really care about the child or more about adhering to some antiquated tradition. As you say it should be revealed what religion this was based on. The people who perform the operations need to be shut down as they are endangering lives.
I used to teach Children's Literature in College. One book I had my students read was Rita Williams-Garcia's No Laughter Here
All my venezuelan students ignored that such a thing was done to little girls in many places of the world; most of my american students did not knowabout it either. They were all shocked at the story.
I am going to guess the parents involved are african muslims. Williams-Garcia's book is great because it is narrated from the perspective of an african american family which is very proud of their african ancestors, but when the mother, who is a social worker learns about what happened to her daughter's best friend (who is taken to africa by her parents and comes back "different"--read traumatized), she puts into question all blind racial afiliation.
You do not have to condone barbaric practices such as FGM just because it is practiced by people your own religion or race.
You did a great job clarifying that this is not merely an african practice or that Islam alone condones questionable practices. What is morally wrong is wrong no matter who does it.
These creature lives have to pay for the suffering they have inflicted on their child.

@genital mutilation should be a regarded as a crime in all countries and cultures....that should make it stop....
the couple deserve to be jailed...i am happy they were jailed so that this would serve as a lesson to other people who might want to do such thing to their kids...
genital mutilation is common in so many countries and it needs to actually STOP...seriously...
