La exposición colectiva «Punto de partida II» se inauguró el pasado 5 de abril y supuso la graduación de los estudiantes de fotografía de la Galería de Arte Concha Ferrant en Guanabacoa. Las exposiciones de este tipo son importantes para la galería, ya que al ser un centro autofinanciado por el Estado, mantiene sus actividades en movimiento gracias a los artistas e incita a la comunidad a acercarse al arte. Cuba es un país con mucha cultura y los cubanos éramos amantes de la diversidad cultural, pero hoy en día el arte de calidad y sus artistas deben hacer grandes sacrificios para continuar existiendo. Me imaginé el evento como un día para entretenerme, conocer gente y pasarlo bien. Así fue y, a través de este blog, comparto con la comunidad mi experiencia.
The collective exhibition "Punto de partida II" opened on April 5 and marked the graduation of the photography students of the Concha Ferrant Art Gallery in Guanabacoa. Exhibitions of this kind are important for the gallery because, being a center self-financed by the State, it keeps its activities in motion thanks to the artists and encourages the community to approach art. Cuba is a country with a lot of culture and Cubans were lovers of cultural diversity, but today quality art and its artists must make great sacrifices to continue to exist. I imagined the event as a day to entertain myself, meet people and have a good time. So it was and, through this blog, I share with the community my experience.
La Galería de Arte Concha Ferrant es un lugar muy bonito y cuidado. Sus trabajadores se esfuerzan mucho para que todo esté en perfectas condiciones, porque aman su trabajo y, sobre todo, el arte y la expresión. Yo creo que el arte educa más que un salón de clases; los mensajes que se expresan a través del arte son mejor recibidos y más apreciados. Para mí, participar por primera vez en una exposición colectiva es una experiencia única. Su título, Punto de partida II, es precisamente eso, el inicio de nuestro camino en la fotografía en su segunda temporada, que para mí fue la primera, pero para otros de mis compañeros no, ya que estuvieron desde el comienzo del curso. De hecho, nuestro grupo de fotografía está compuesto por personas con distintas profesiones. Aquí puedes encontrar un periodista del periódico Juventud Rebelde, una profesora y metodóloga de Física, una filóloga, una historiadora, un pintor, músicos, un informático y una geóloga, y a todos nos ha unido y fraternizado el arte.
The Concha Ferrant Art Gallery is a very nice and well-kept place. Its workers make a great effort so that everything is in perfect condition, because they love their work and, above all, art and expression. I believe that art educates more than a classroom; messages expressed through art are better received and more appreciated. For me, participating for the first time in a group exhibition is a unique experience. Its title, Starting Point II, is precisely that, the beginning of our journey in photography in its second season, which for me was the first, but for others of my classmates it was not, since they were there since the beginning of the course. In fact, our photography group is composed of people with different professions. Here you can find a journalist from the newspaper Juventud Rebelde, a physics teacher and methodologist, a philologist, a historian, a painter, musicians, a computer scientist and a geologist, and we have all been united and fraternized by art.
Mi obra se titula Soft o pacífico, y refleja lo que sentí cuando entré en el lugar donde tomé las fotos. Se trata de una iglesia a la que nunca había entrado antes en Miramar, Playa. Al entrar, lo primero que me vino a la mente fue la inmensidad del lugar y cómo la calma o la paz pueden llenarte; cómo las esculturas, los detalles de las paredes, la arquitectura y el espacio pueden hacerte dejar de pensar en el exterior y llevarte a perderte en tu interior sin forzarlo. Creo que idealicé el lugar porque me inspiró todo y simplemente quise expresar la sensibilidad humana de un estado y un momento, porque todos necesitamos un momento suave y pacífico en nuestras vidas para continuar adelante.
My work is titled Soft o pacífico, and it reflects what I felt when I entered the place where I took the photos. It is a church that I had never entered before in Miramar, Playa. Upon entering, the first thing that came to my mind was the immensity of the place and how calmness or peace can fill you; how the sculptures, the details of the walls, the architecture and the space can make you stop thinking about the outside and lead you to get lost inside without forcing it. I think I idealized the place because I was inspired by everything and I simply wanted to express the human sensibility of a state and a moment, because we all need a soft and peaceful moment in our lives to move on.
Recuerdo que, cuando comenzamos con los preparativos de la exposición, me dije varias veces: «Ay, no voy a participar, tengo que hacer muchas otras cosas». Sin embargo, mi compromiso para no hacerles un desaire a los profesores, mi deseo de culminar el proceso de formación y mi intención de que otras personas vieran mis fotos me mantuvieron en la línea. Es complicado montar una exposición en Cuba, pero el apoyo de todos los integrantes del grupo de fotografía fue increíble: si un compañero no tenía dinero para los materiales, otro compañero lo ponía; si alguien no podía ir a imprimir sus obras, otro compañero le hacía el favor. Y esta unión fue lo que hizo que todos llegáramos a exponer y que la exposición fuera un éxito y agradara al público asistente.
I remember that, when we started with the preparations for the exhibition, I said to myself several times: "Oh, I'm not going to participate, I have to do many other things". However, my commitment not to snub the teachers, my desire to complete the training process and my intention for other people to see my photos kept me in line. It is complicated to mount an exhibition in Cuba, but the support of all the members of the photography group was incredible: if a colleague did not have money for the materials, another colleague provided it; if someone could not go to print his works, another colleague did him the favor. And this union was what made us all get to exhibit and that the exhibition was a success and pleased the public.
Durante la exposición, dos artistas se me acercaron: un pintor y un fotógrafo, ambos muy reconocidos en Guanabacoa. El pintor me elogió, mientras que el fotógrafo me hizo recomendaciones sobre mi técnica. Uno de los asistentes, que no tiene nada que ver con el arte, se puso a hablar conmigo sobre mi obra, sin saber que yo era la fotógrafa, y dijo que mis cuadros y los de otra de mis compañeras eran los que más le habían llamado la atención de toda la exposición. Luego, otras personas del público se interesaron por el lugar donde tomé mis fotografías; cuando les dije el municipio, simplemente respondieron: «Tuviste que caminar bastante».
During the exhibition, two artists approached me: a painter and a photographer, both well known in Guanabacoa. The painter praised me, while the photographer made recommendations about my technique. One of the attendees, who has nothing to do with art, started talking to me about my work, without knowing that I was the photographer, and said that my paintings and those of another of my companions were the ones that had caught his attention the most in the whole exhibition. Then, other people in the audience were interested in the place where I took my photographs; when I told them the municipality, they simply replied: "You had to walk a long way".
Creo que la vida es una caja de sorpresas, porque nunca habría imaginado que llegaría a exponer fotografías en una galería o que me dedicaría a este tipo de arte. La exposición fue un evento muy entretenido, conocí a un público al que le apasiona este tipo de arte y lo pasé muy bien con mis compañeros y profesores. Mi obra Soft o pacífico nació en un momento de muchas incertidumbres, pero lo logré sacar adelante y me siento muy feliz y emocionada por haberlo hecho.
I think life is a box of surprises, because I would never have imagined that I would get to exhibit photographs in a gallery or that I would dedicate myself to this type of art. The exhibition was a very entertaining event, I met an audience that is passionate about this type of art and I had a great time with my classmates and teachers. My work Soft o pacífico was born in a moment of many uncertainties, but I managed to pull it off and I feel very happy and excited for having done it.
