Quizás el término santanilla no sea familiar para todo el que lo escuche. Pero esta es una diminuta hormiga de color castaño que también es conocida como hormiga de fuego en otras partes del mundo. En Cuba es común encontrarla en cualquier lugar, sobre todo en lugares húmedos y cerca de la tierra. De andar pausado e insignificante tamaño, parece inofensiva, pero nada más lejos de la verdad. Son conocidas por su dolorosa picadura en total falta de correspondencia con su tamaño. Su picadura es tan intensa que el dolor y la ardentía puede durar más de cuarenta minutos. Y hoy lo supe en carne propia, una vez más. Claro, no pensaran ustedes que con más de cincuenta años es mi primer encuentro con algunas de estas susodichas.
Pasé buena parte de la mañana en la tarea titánica de sacar, de un banco, los últimos kilos de mi menguada cuenta y no bastó con que tuviera que pasar dos largas horas haciendo una cola, sino que encima de eso, fui víctima de una de estas criaturas. Reconozco que quizás la culpa fue mía por ir a sentarme justo en un muro por donde había un cordón de inocentes santanillas, seguramente, en busca de alimento. Pero me dolían los pies y tuve que buscar donde descansar un rato. Al parecer, mis nalgas resultaron un excelente nutriente para varios miembros de la colonia porque se ensañaron conmigo. Para mí es un misterio entender como se las arreglan, las muy curiosas, para picar por encima de la ropa.
Es menester destacar que este sutil animalillo tiene un modus operandis muy particular. Su lenta caminata por la piel es apenas perceptible y cuando vienes a darte cuenta, es demasiado tarde. Lo cierto es que sentada en mi larga espera, pase tremendo mal rato tratando de rascar con discreción "aquél lugar", sin que las personas se dieran cuenta. Sentí ganas de volar, de gritar, de correr y de llorar, pero lo único que pude hacer fue aguantar, y me que los escritores me perdonen tantos ar.
Y uno se pregunta cómo es posible que un animalito tan pequeño pueda causar tal molestia. Pues esto se debe al ácido fórmico, una sustancia que expulsan y hace función de veneno y defensa. Algo importante es que, en el peor de los casos, esta picadura puede causar, hinchazón, ampollas, infecciones y hasta cierto enrojecimiento sospecho en la zona, que bien pudiera ser mal interpretado por un marido o una esposa celosa. En fin, mire usted cómo una simple picadita puede llegar a ser la causa de divorcio y en casos extremos, hasta de homicidio. Por suerte, yo no tengo marido.

Perhaps the term "santanilla" is not familiar to everyone who hears it. But this is a tiny brown ant that is also known as the fire ant in other parts of the world. In Cuba, it is common to find them anywhere, especially in damp places and close to the ground. With their slow movement and insignificant size, they seem harmless, but nothing could be further from the truth. They are known for their painful bite, which is completely disproportionate to their size. Their sting is so intense that the pain and burning can last for more than forty minutes. And today, I experienced it firsthand, once again. Of course, you wouldn’t think that at over fifty years old, this is my first encounter with some of these little creatures.
I spent a good part of the morning on the titanic task of withdrawing the last few kilos from my dwindling bank account, and not only did I have to wait in line for two long hours, but on top of that, I fell victim to one of these creatures. I admit that it might have been my fault for sitting on a wall where a line of innocent santanillas was passing, surely in search of food. But my feet were hurting, and I had to find a place to rest for a while. Apparently, my backside turned out to be an excellent source of nutrients for several members of the colony because they went after me relentlessly. For me, it’s a mystery how these curious little creatures manage to bite through clothing.
It’s worth noting that this subtle little animal has a very particular modus operandi. Their slow crawl on the skin is barely noticeable, and by the time you realize it, it’s too late. The truth is, while sitting during my long wait, I had a terrible time trying to discreetly scratch "that area" without anyone noticing. I felt like flying, screaming, running, and crying, but the only thing I could do was endure. And I hope writers will forgive me for so many "ars."
And one wonders how such a tiny creature can cause so much discomfort. Well, this is due to formic acid, a substance they release that acts as both poison and defense. Importantly, in the worst cases, this bite can cause swelling, blisters, infections, and even some suspicious redness in the area, which could easily be misinterpreted by a jealous husband or wife. In short, just imagine how a simple little bite could end up being the cause of a divorce and, in extreme cases, even homicide. Luckily, I don’t have a husband.

Son incómodas con P... Me has hecho reír muchísimo y recordar además que terrible era uno de adolescente. En la Brigada de Regadío cuando vivía en la Isla de la Juventud durante la secundaria y el Pre, era una Estrategia de los varones para ver tetas 🤭 solían haber muchas en las toronjas 😈😆
